transforming lives through education

THE FREE HIGH SCHOOL FOR ADULTS, NICARAGUA

In Nicaragua, being born in poverty often precludes access to high school education and all the opportunities that come with it, especially for women. The town high school excludes pregnant girls and women with children and anyone over 18. Many barrio residents can’t attend it on weekdays, because they work. Many rural families, who practice subsistence farming, live too far from town. The Free High School of San Juan del Sur, opened in 2002, gives all these individuals, excluded from regular schools, a chance at secondary education and a better life. Our rural middle schools reach students as young as thirteen, who live far and can’t afford bus fare. The Saturday School, open to all grades, grants the diploma.

1100 people have graduated as of 2017. Hundreds have gone on to higher education. With the help of Random Acts, Child’s Play, and the Coen Foundation, we have a beautiful sustainable campus, state-of-the-art computer and visual/sound systems, and a newly opened Technical High School. We invite you to join us in action and help keep all these fine programs going!
